They're chemically identical, yet they differ in origin, rarity and price. A clear look at both, so you can choose the one that suits your story.
One of the most common questions we're asked is whether a lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It is. Chemically, physically and optically, lab-grown and natural diamonds are the same material. The differences lie elsewhere — in how they came to exist, how rare they are, and what they cost.
The same material, a different origin
A natural diamond formed deep in the earth over a period measured in billions of years, then travelled to the surface through volcanic activity. A lab-grown diamond is created in a controlled environment over a period of weeks, using processes that replicate the conditions of that formation.
The result in both cases is crystallised carbon with the same hardness, the same refractive index and the same brilliance. A jeweller cannot tell them apart by eye; distinguishing them requires specialised equipment, which is precisely why certification matters.
Rarity and price
This is the practical difference. Because lab-grown diamonds can be produced to order, they are not scarce, and they typically cost significantly less than a natural diamond of comparable size and quality. That difference lets you choose a larger stone, a better cut, or a more elaborate setting for the same budget.
Natural diamonds carry the value of genuine geological scarcity. Every one is finite and unrepeatable, and for many people that origin is central to what the piece means.
Which should you choose?
There is no correct answer, only the one that fits what you're marking. Some considerations that tend to help:
- If maximising size or quality within a set budget matters most, lab-grown offers more for the money.
- If the stone's age and natural rarity are part of its meaning to you, choose natural.
- If long-term resale is a consideration, natural diamonds have a longer established market.
- Either way, insist on independent certification — it is your record of exactly what you own.
Our position
We offer both, and we don't push either. A diamond is a personal decision, and the right one is whichever you'll be glad to look down at years from now. What we will always do is tell you exactly what a stone is, show you the certificate, and let you compare them side by side before you decide.
Have a question about your next piece? We're always happy to talk it through.
